The topic sentence contains the central idea around which a paragraph is developed. A good topic sentence has the following characteristics:
- It introduces the topic of a paragraph without announcing it.
- It hooks the reader.
- It plants questions in the reader's mind.
- It uses thought-provoking words.
- It is usually the first sentence in the paragraph, but doesn't have to be.
- It provides a transition from the previous paragraph.
Monday - Develop a topic sentence including at least 3 of the 6 items above. Write a paragraph (having at least 8 sentences) supporting your topic sentence.
Tuesday - Make sure that you can show that your paragraph sentences prove/support your topic sentences.
Wednesday - Proofread for grammatical errors.
Thursday - Turn in paragraph.
Friday - Test over parts of a sentence. We will Jig Saw this all week in class.
